The Miksang Series

Miksang is Tibetan for “good eye.” This term was popularized in the west by Lama Chogyam Trungpa. It refers to pure perception; that is, seeing/experiencing without the filter of the conceptualizing mind. Through the contemplation of the smallest detail and the most fleeting of images, this kind of seeing evokes joy and an awareness of our interconnectedness to the entire fabric of life. I pay homage to miksang in this series of paintings which explores traditional Tibetan Buddhist iconography. Several pieces relate to the life and teachings of the historical Buddha, while others depict aspects of the female Buddha Tara in both her white and green manifestations. The surface of each panel is composed of a grid of deconstructed used tea bags. I am interested in the relationship between this richly textured ground and the more delicate and translucent quality of the water-colored imagery.
