His Holiness the Sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje (1924-1981), was the supreme head of the Kagyu Lineage. Renowned as a living Buddha, an awesome master of many masters, he rebuilt the Kagyu Order in exile at Rumtek Monastery near Gangtok, Sikkim; discovered, raised, and educated numerous reincarnate lamas; and travelled widely around the world.
After establishing a monastic seat in Dordogne, France and in Woodstock, NY, he passed away near Chicago, IL in 1981.
The Black Hat Lama of Tibet by Nik Douglas and Penny Slinger is about this great master. He was the root guru of Lama Surya Das.
