Venerable Lama Thubten Yeshe, from Sera Monastery in Tibet, was Surya Das's first Tibetan Lama teacher. Surya Das lived in Lama Yeshe's hilltop Kopan monastery near Kathmandu, Nepal. It is the first Tibetan monastery to train Westerners. Surya Das was one of Lama Yeshe's English teachers.
Lama Yeshe established the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Teachings; travelled widely teaching and establishing Buddhist centers; and founded Wisdom Publications.
